The Karachi Stock Exchange was founded on September 18, 1947, and formally incorporated on March 10, 1949. To meet the stock trading needs of the provincial metropolis, a second stock exchange was established in Lahore in October 1970. The Islamabad Stock Exchange was founded in October 1989 to serve investors in the country’s northern regions. The three exchanges that were integrating their operations merged on January 11, 2016, under the new name ‘Pakistan Stock Exchange Limited (PSX).
PSX has made significant progress in its history, beginning with a small presence of five listed companies and a total paid-up capital of PKR 37 million. There were 81 companies listed on the bourse in 1960, with a market capitalization of PKR 1.8 billion, whereas there are now 546 (as of December 31, 2018) companies listed on the bourse, with a market capitalization of PKR 7.692 trillion. The listed companies are divided into 35 industry sectors/groups.

The KSE100 index represents a representative sample of common stocks traded on the Karachi Stock Exchange. The total market value of the indexed stocks is around Rs. 1,197 billion, compared to the total market value of over 679 stocks listed on the Karachi Stock Exchange which is Rs. 1,365 billion. As of February 27th, 2004, the KSE100 Index represented 88 percent of the total market capitalization of the Karachi Stock Exchange.
